West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar will be the NDA’s Vice Presidential candidate. The BJP has played a big political bet by making Dhankhar a candidate. Dhankhar became the Governor of Bengal in July 2019. After this, he had a constant confrontation with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The tension between the two had increased to such an extent that the Chief Minister had blocked the Governor on Twitter. Let us know why the NDA made Dhankhar the candidate for the post of Vice President.
Mamta’s fight
After becoming the governor in July 2019, in December the same year, students outside Jadavpur University stopped Dhankhar and showed black flags. Since then, Dhankhar has been very vocal about the law and order situation in Bengal and the role of the government there. Through his posts on social media, he kept writing about what the powers of the Governor say and how the Chief Minister is obliged to inform the Governor.
There was also a comment on the political violence of Bengal
Dhankhar also once said in the context of the political violence in Bengal that how the state is becoming a gas chamber of democracy and human rights are in danger there. When Dhankhar said that the Chief Minister did not give the information sought by him on several occasions and even blacked out his address in the Assembly twice, an angry Mamata blocked him on Twitter itself. By 2022, the relations between Mamta and Dhankhar had become so strained that the state government brought a bill that the chancellor of the state universities will no longer be the governor, but the chief minister.
Jat face and farmer
Dhankhar hails from Rajasthan, belongs to a farmer family and comes from the Jat community. Jat farmers were also involved in large numbers in the farmers’ movement against the Modi government. Apart from this, the number of Jat voters and farmers is significant in Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and Western Uttar Pradesh. Jat voters play a decisive role in many constituencies. Assembly elections are also to be held in Rajasthan next year. It is worth noting that while announcing Dhankhar’s candidature, BJP President JP Nadda addressed him as ‘Kisan Putra’.
Dhankhar hence better candidate for BJP
Due to his ability to counter Mamata and being a Jat leader, Dhankhar became the first choice for the BJP’s Vice Presidential candidate. In fact, wherever BJP could not reach in Bengal, Dhankhar tried to communicate as governor. On the other hand, when another Jat leader and present Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik is vocal against the central government these days, BJP has tried to reach out to the Jat community by making Dhankhar the Vice Presidential candidate.
assertive personality
Dhankhar Chaudhary has been close to Devi Lal. He was in Janata Dal during VP Singh’s era. The special thing is that they do not come from the core ideology of BJP or RSS, but from farmer politics. He is not known as a leader who remains silent on constitutional posts, but as a leader who gives his comments on important issues.
