Sri Lanka’s veteran leader Dinesh Gunawardene has been scheduled as the new Prime Minister. He was scheduled PM by newly elected President Ranil Wickremesinghe. President Wickremesinghe administered him the oath of office and secrecy.
Wickremesinghe was elected the new President on Wednesday. The pair of Wickremesinghe and Gunawardene now have the undersong of rescuing Sri Lanka from the unprecedented economic crisis. Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his allies have left the country.

Both President Wickremesingh and PM Gunawardene are 73 years old. Dinesh Gunawardene is a senior Sri Lankan politician, Member of Parliament, former Cabinet Minister and Member of Parliament of Sri Lanka. Gunawardene has previously been the Foreign Minister and Education Minister of Sri Lanka. Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa made him Home Minister in April. Wickremesinghe took oath on Thursday. He has been elected the eighth President of the country.
Last week, the then President Gotabaya fled the country with his family without a massive uproar and protests in the country. Subsequently, Parliament has elected Ranil Wickremesinghe as President for the remainder of Gotabaya’s term. Wickremesinghe has been the Prime Minister of the country six times. But this is the first time he has come to the presidency.
Sri Lanka is facing a huge economic crisis. The economic condition of the country has deteriorated so much that there is no money to import essential goods and fuel. In such a situation, the new pair of President and Prime Minister has an important responsibility to bring the country out of this trouble and bring it when on track.
