Upadhyay said the court had agreed to hear the hijab case on Wednesday. I had filed this PIL in February. Earlier in February, Nikhil Upadhyay through lawyers Ashwini Upadhyay and Ashwini Dubey had filed a PIL in the Supreme Court. In this, in view of the hijab controversy, there was a demand to implement uniform dress code in educational institutions.

The Supreme Court has given two more months to the central government to respond to a plea seeking implementation of a law or rule to ensure that citizens perform the fundamental duties enshrined in the Constitution.

A bench of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice MM Sundaresh asked the government to file its reply within two months. During the hearing, Attorney General KK Venugopal told the bench that inputs have been sought from various departments and ministries and their response is awaited.

The court has fixed the matter for further hearing on September 26. On February 21, the Supreme Court issued notices to the Center and the states on a PIL filed by advocate Durga Dutt. In this, there has been a demand to bring a law to perform the fundamental duties of citizens enshrined in the Constitution.

The court had sought the government’s response on the steps taken till then to sensitize people and spread awareness about fundamental duties. The petition states that the Constitution has provided certain fundamental rights to the citizens, but the citizens are also required to follow certain basic norms of democratic conduct and democratic behavior as rights and duties go hand in hand.
