The corona virus epidemic has raised its head again. A new sub-variant of the corona virus, which has been wreaking havoc for two and a half years, has raised concern in many countries of the world including America. This sub-variant of the variant Omicron of the corona virus is being known as BA.5. Many experts have described it as the most infectious sub-variant so far. In view of its rapid spread, the World Health Organization (WHO) has requested all the countries of the world to make wearing masks mandatory again.

According to American experts, an indication of the spread of the new sub-variant is that the corona epidemic is not over yet. WHO has stated that BA.5 is a related sub-variant of BA.4. Due to this, the number of infected people worldwide has increased by 30 percent in the last one week.

According to Dr. Michael Ryan, executive director of the WHO’s Emergency Health Program, there has been an increase of at least 25 percent in cases of infection due to this sub-variant in Europe. He said that since people are no longer getting tested, it is possible that the actual number of infected people may be much higher than this. On the other hand, in China too, the number of people infected with BA.5 has increased rapidly in the last one week. It has become the dominant strain (most effective) in America. This has also been confirmed by the US agency Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Dr. Ashish Jha, co-ordinator of the US President’s Kovid-19 Response Unit, told the TV channel CNN- ‘We have seen that the corona virus continues to develop rapidly. So we were well prepared for the situation now unfolding. The message I want to send to the Americans is this – we are closely monitoring BA.5 and most importantly, we know what we need to do to overcome it.’

Eric Topol, Professor of Molecular Medicine at US-based Scripps Research, described BA.5 as the worst version of Omicron ever seen. He has written in a newsletter – Its ability to penetrate human immunity is more than all versions of Omicron, so the risk of getting infected has increased.

Topol said in an interview with CNN that the immunity created so far due to chronic infections and vaccinations, BA.5 can easily penetrate it. But he said that there is no sign yet of the emergence of serious symptoms due to its infection. Still, he feared that the number of people hospitalized could rise sharply in the coming days.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has warned that a new wave of infection has occurred due to ba.4 and ba.5 subvariants. He said – people have reduced the precautions. Testing and isolating suspected infected people has now been stopped.
