Sri Lankan refugees say crisis also provides opportunity
Sri Lankan refugees said on Wednesday that the current crisis in Sri Lanka has provided an opportunity to fulfill the aspirations of Tamil citizens and rebuild the country economically. He said the new breed of leaders who shun hegemony and caste-based politics should lead the government formation initiative and involve all sections of the people, including Tamils and Muslims, in their efforts. This will lead to cooperative and firm action, he said.
Of the 112 Tamils who arrived in Tamil Nadu following the recent crisis in Sri Lanka, one woman died and the others were kept in residences in Dakshina Ramanathapuram district. For Tamils living in the northern and eastern provinces of Sri Lanka, the lack of food and fuel, power cuts and lack of employment opportunities is nothing new. R Padmanathan said that this is not new to the Tamil people. For the last 40 years Tamils are living without electricity and facing shortage of everything.

Chief of Defense Staff appealed
Sri Lanka’s army and police on Wednesday urged the speaker of parliament to convene an all-party leaders’ meeting and inform him of the steps. Chief of Defense Staff General Shavendra Silva asked the people, especially the youth, to support the three forces (Army, Navy and Air Force) and the police to maintain law and order. He urged the protesters not to damage state or private property. In a televised address with the chiefs of the Air Force, Army, Navy and Police, Silva said, “We have requested the commanders of the tri-forces and the Inspector General of Police (Mahinda Yapa Abhayawardene) to convene an all-party leaders’ meeting and give us the opportunity to meet them. Be informed of the steps they will take to ensure a political solution to the current conflict until a new President is appointed.
