Ranil Wickremesinghe was on Thursday sworn in as the caretaker president amid the ongoing political turmoil in Sri Lanka. Earlier, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who had fled the country, resigned from the post of President. This was officially announced by the Speaker of Parliament, Mahinda Yapa Abhaywardene on Friday.
Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned two days after leaving the country amid growing outrage against himself and his family for not handling the country’s economy. Rajapaksa sent his resignation to the speaker of parliament via email after he was allowed to travel to Singapore on a private visit on Thursday.
What did the speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka say?
Speaker Abhaywardene on Friday morning made an official announcement of his resignation after confirming the credibility of Rajapaksa’s resignation letter and said that I have received the resignation letter sent by President Rajapaksa. Accordingly, the President has resigned, with effect from July 14.
In a brief statement, the speaker said Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe would take over as interim president until the process of electing a new president by Parliament is completed. He further said that I request the cooperation of leaders of all parties, government officials and security officials. I humbly request the public to create such a peaceful environment in which all MPs can work freely according to their conscience.
