Shanghai Cooperation Organization Secretary General Zhang Ming Says Varanasi To Be First Cultural And Tourism Capital Of Sco

Varanasi, the holy city showcasing Indian culture and traditions, will be declared as the first cultural and tourism capital of the SCO. This was announced on Friday by Shanghai Cooperation Organization bloc general secretary Zhang Ming in Beijing. During this, he also talked about the SCO summit to be held in Samarkand.
He pointed out that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization runs a program to promote people-to-people contact and tourism among its member countries. Under which every year a city with cultural heritage of a member country is declared the capital of the organization. Varanasi will become the cultural and tourism capital of the SCO for 2022-23 under a new initiative by the eight-member organization.
Zhang told the media here that under this initiative, every year a city with cultural heritage of a member country would be assigned the post of chairman of these new initiatives of the organization.
Summit to be held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan
He also referred to the summit of the Heads of State of the SCO to be held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan from September 15 to 16 this year. He said the new SCO initiative would be implemented after the Samarkand summit. India will then take over as the presidency of the SCO and host the next Heads of State Summit. It is worth noting that India hosted the meeting of the Heads of SCO in the year 2020.
Secretary-General Zhang Ming said that the SCO member countries are considering a number of initiatives to promote tourism to increase people-to-people contact once the Corona travel restrictions are relaxed. He also said that Kazakhstan has announced a free visa policy for tourists from other countries including India. He said that the SCO countries should explore their tourism options.
SCO is an economic political alliance of 8 countries
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is an economic, political and security alliance. It includes 8 countries including China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan. India and Pakistan joined it on 9 June 2017. SCO member states work to promote mutual cooperation against terrorism and for regional peace. It is also the world’s largest regional organization by population and the largest consumer market.
