Members of the minority Hindu community protested outside the residence of former President Asif Ali Zardari at Nawabshah in Sindh province against the abduction and forced conversion of 16-year-old Hindu girl Kareena, and her subsequent marriage.

The protesters said that on July 6, the family members of Khaleel Rehman Jano kidnapped Kareena from Unnar locality of Qazi Ahmed Nagar. The people raised slogans against the police and sought help from the former President to intervene in the matter and find the girl. According to the local police, Kareena was not kidnapped, but she has voluntarily accompanied Khaleel to the village of Mir Mohammad. He has married her in the court of Karachi.

The police claimed that Khaleel’s father Asghar Jano was arrested after Sundarmal filed a report. Showing the purported marriage certificate of Kareena and Khaleel, the SSP said, the girl will be produced in the Sindh High Court. From there she can go wherever she wants. Hindu panchayat vice-president Lajpat Rai termed the SSP’s claim as false and said, “People from the Hindu community met him, but they did not help.”

Earlier this year, in Sindh province itself, Hindu girl Pooja Kumari was murdered when she was protesting against the attackers who entered the house. Human rights activists say that the condition of women, minorities, children and those working in the media in Pakistan is very bad.
