The central government is coming up with a bill to control digital media and treat it at par with a newspaper. After getting legal recognition of this bill, it will become necessary to register news portals like newspapers. So far this rule is applicable only to newspapers.
Actually, the central government is going to abolish the 155-year-old Press and Registration of Books Act. It will be replaced by the ‘Press and Registration of Periodical Bill’. This bill will be a new and easy registration system for newspapers, under this there is a preparation to bring digital media as well. It is believed that the central government can introduce this bill only during the monsoon session.
According to the information, this bill will replace the Press and Registration of Books (PRB) Act, 1867. Under this, the procedures for medium and small publishers will be kept simple and the values of freedom of the press will be maintained.
The draft was prepared in 2019
The government had released the draft of the Press and Registration of Periodical Bill in 2019 itself, in which apart from easing the process of registration of newspapers, there is a provision to bring digital media under its ambit. The 2019 draft bill had defined ‘news on digital media’ as ‘news in digital format that can be broadcast over the Internet, computer, mobile network’. This includes text, audio, video and graphics.
