Jagdeep Dhankhar, a well-known face of the politics of Rajasthan for a long time and currently the Governor of West Bengal, has been declared by the Bharatiya Janata Party and NDA as its candidate for the post of Vice President. Born in a Jat family of Jhunjhunu district
Jagdeep Dhankhar was born in village Kithana of Jhunjhunu district in the year 1951 in a simple farmer family. His father’s name is Gokal Chand and mother’s name is Kesari Devi. Jagdeep comes second among his four siblings. She was married to Sudesh Dhankhar in 1979. They both have a daughter, Kamna. Who is married to Kartikeya Vajpayee.

Studied from Rajasthan University
He did his early education from the Government Secondary School in the village Kithana. After his studies from the village till the fifth standard, he was enrolled in the Government Middle School in Gardhana. After this he also studied in Sainik School, Chittorgarh. After graduating in Physics after 12th, Jagdeep Dhankhar completed his law studies from Rajasthan University. Dhankhar was also selected for IIT, NDA and IAS, but he chose advocacy. He also started his advocacy from Rajasthan High Court. He was also the chairman of the Rajasthan Bar Council.

Politics started with Janata Dal
Dhankhar started his politics with Janata Dal. Dhankhar became an MP from Jhunjhunu in 1989. He was also made a Union Minister in the government of VP Singh and Chandrashekhar from 1989 to 1991. However, when Janata Dal cut Jagdeep Dhankhar’s ticket in 1991 Lok Sabha elections, he left the party and joined Congress and contested from Kishangarh in Ajmer in 1993 on Congress party ticket and became MLA. In 2003, he got disillusioned with the Congress and left the Congress and joined the BJP. Jagdeep Dhankhar, 70, was appointed as the 28th Governor of Bengal by President Ram Nath Kovind on 30 July 2019.

Mamta government was blamed for the violence
Jagdeep Dhankhar has made a lot of headlines after taking over as the Governor of West Bengal in the year 2019. Controversies arose between him and CM Mamata Banerjee during his tenure as the Governor of West Bengal. Dhankhar had directly blamed the Mamata government for the political violence in the state after the West Bengal elections. Apart from this, during his visit to North Bengal on June 21, 2021, he had said that people are being killed in these circumstances, I am not the governor to keep silent. Apart from this, there was a war of words between him and CM Mamta many times in the dispute that started regarding the Vice-Chancellor of the State University.

TMC had tried to get him removed from the post
Not only this, the confrontation between the two had increased so much that the TMC had also recommended to the President to remove him from the post of Governor. The TMC delegation, citing sub-section 1 of Article 156 of the Constitution, said that they did not follow the Constitution, did not even obey the order of the Supreme Court, therefore appealed for the removal of the Governor. However they were not removed.

Jagdeep Dhankhar is not only a politician but also a respected lawyer. His name is included in the senior lawyers of the Supreme Court. He comes from the Jat community of Rajasthan and played an important role in getting reservation for Jats in Rajasthan. Dhankhar has a lot of credibility in this community. The BJP wants to strengthen its hold among the Jats through them.
