India And Niti Aayog Praised At Un On Sustainable Development Goal

Amina Mohamed, deputy secretary general of the world body, has praised the Government of India and NITI Aayog. Appreciating the localization of Sustainable Development Goals in the country to a remarkable level, he said that as India moves towards sustainable development and achieves the goals, so will the region and the world. The top UN official began the address by saying ‘Namaste’.

Amina Mohamed was speaking at a special Indian session of the UN’s High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development on the theme ‘Indian Models of SDG Localization: Towards Full Implementation of the 2030 Agenda’. He said, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) recognize that the world is interconnected to an unprecedented level.

Amina, Deputy Chief of the United Nations, said, the degree to which the message of interconnectedness has been adopted in India, from the Center to the states and districts and private households, is truly wonderful. I commend India and NITI Aayog for adopting the SDGs to this remarkable level. Indicators and targets are embedded in planning, budgeting and monitoring structures at all levels of government.

The program was also addressed by NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Berry and UNDP Under Secretary General and Assistant Administrator Usha Rao-Monari. Rao-Monari said that NITI Aayog’s efforts to localize the SDGs have made SDGs a common language that encourages cooperation among stakeholders. UNDP is proud of its long-standing partnership with NITI Aayog, he said.
