The opposition Congress in Goa has shifted five of its 11 MLAs in the state to Chennai ahead of the July 18 presidential election. Five MLAs – Sankalp Amonkar, Yuri Alemao, Altone de Costa, Rudolf Fernandes and Carlos Alvares Ferreira – were taken to Chennai soon after the assembly session ended on Friday evening.
A senior Congress leader said, he will return directly to Goa to participate in the presidential election to be held on Monday. The monsoon session of the Goa Legislative Assembly, which began on July 11, will continue till next Friday. However, six other MLAs of the opposition party – former chief ministers Digambar Kamat, Michael Lobo, Deliala Lobo, Kedar Naik, Alexo Sequeira and Rajesh Faldesai – are not part of the group that has gone to Chennai. Michael Lobo said he did not know why the five other MLAs were taken to Chennai.
Goa government took a big decision
Earlier, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that the state government is working to do away with the criminal provisions of the old laws relating to industries. Addressing the Annual General Meeting of the Goa State Industry Association in Panaji on Friday, he said that it has been a national policy to do away with the criminal provisions of the old and unused laws. Accordingly, we are doing away with the criminal provisions of the laws relating to the industry. He said that criminal provisions of 13 laws relating to various functional areas have already been abolished while 40-50 more provisions will be done away with in future cabinet meetings. Some of these laws pertain to industries.
