A delegation of the Foreign Liaison Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has tried to connect with all the political forces of Nepal here. Although the main focus of this party, which came here on Sunday, has been on dialogue with communist parties, but at the same time it has tried to take the Nepali Congress into confidence. The team is led by Liu Jianchao, the head of the CPC’s foreign liaison department.
On Tuesday, Liu held detailed talks with former prime minister and Communist Party of Nepal (UML) president KP Sharma Oli. Earlier, he had long talks with the President of Communist Party of Nepal (Miost Centre) Pushpa Kamal Dahal. On Monday, he met Nepal’s Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba.
After his meeting with Deuba and External Affairs Minister Narayan Khadka, the CPC’s Foreign Liaison Department said in a statement that it is a historic moment when the world is going through changes that have not been seen in the last one century. The world is entering a period of turbulent change. At such a time, the Communist Party of China wants to strengthen its strategic dialogue with the Nepali Congress, to further deepen the exchange of views about each other’s central interests and core concerns. Also, the process of learning from each other can be deepened.
It was told from Nepal that during this dialogue, Nepal reiterated its commitment to one China policy. This is understood to mean support for Chinese policy on the Taiwan and Tibet dispute. Nepal has also assured Liu that it will not allow its land to be used for anti-China activities.
According to analysts, Liu’s visit has made it clear that now China will give equal importance to all parties in Nepal. A leader of the Nepali Congress told the newspaper Kathmandu Post that the message has been given that China will no longer support factionalism against one party in Nepal. Despite this, there is concern in the Nepali Congress. The reason for this is a sign that China is trying to bring unity among the communist parties.
Nepal’s communists have always been influenced by China. The last time when the Maoist Center and the UML formed the Communist Party of Nepal, the Chinese ambassador to Kathmandu, Hau Yanchi, was believed to be behind it. But this unity did not last and the party split again.
It is now understood that the Chinese Communist Party has changed its policy due to the recent increased interest of the US in Nepal. Rajeshwar Acharya, who was Nepal’s ambassador to China, told the Kathmandu Post that Liu’s visit appears to be inspired by geopolitical changes in the region and the security concerns that have arisen. He said that China has probably realized that the way America is increasing its influence in Nepal, it can create a new challenge for the security of Tibet. In such a situation, this delegation has come to remind that China is such a friend of Nepal, who has come in handy at all times.
